GROUNDING: A SIMPLE MORNING RITUAL TO CALM YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM

I used to think “grounding” was something only wellness experts with lots of free time did—like meditating on a mountaintop or retreating to the forest. Turns out, grounding can be as simple as stepping outside barefoot on the lawn.

That’s it. Just you, your feet, and the earth.

I started because I’d heard it was good for the nervous system, but I didn’t realize how much it mattered until I skipped it. One week, stress was building, and I thought I’d “save time” by dropping the small things I did for myself in the morning. Not a good idea.

By the end of the week, overwhelm was running the show. So I stepped outside, placed my feet on the grass, tilted my face to the sun, and breathed. Within minutes, I could feel my whole system begin to settle.

Now, grounding has become one of my go-to little shifts.

Why grounding helps:
Nervous system reset: Connecting your body to the earth’s surface can help regulate stress and calm the mind.

Mood boost: Early morning sunlight while you’re grounding helps set your circadian rhythm and improves sleep.

Gratitude stacking: Add in a moment of thankfulness—like noticing the tree in your yard or the changing seasons, or expressing what you're thankful for—and you’ve got double the benefits in the same amount of time.

And because I live in Canada, (and I'm not hardcore enough to shovel out a spot on my lawn to stand barefoot on grass) in the winter, I find other ways: sometimes it’s pausing with a hand on a tree during a dog walk, other times it’s simply noticing nature around me. The connection is still there.

The Little Shift
Grounding isn’t about adding another complicated ritual to your life. It’s about claiming a moment—barefoot in the grass, hand on a tree, or even just pausing to notice the sky—and letting your body remember that you belong here.
